The San Diego Padres had been capable of get into the playoffs after what was a shaky begin to the 2026 MLB season, however the workforce fell in need of its aim to win the World Sequence.
San Diego misplaced in 4 video games to the Milwaukee Brewers, seeing one other yr go by and not using a title, sending this workforce into an important offseason. The Padres’ entrance workplace can have so much to determine this offseason, particularly inside the beginning rotation, with key gamers hitting free company.
Padres Linked With Tarik Skubal
One title that has began to generate some buzz across the Padres because the offseason will get going is ace Tarik Skubal, who cut up time with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers. San Diego may look to go after Skubal, giving their rotation a significant increase for the long run.
MLB analyst Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report not too long ago ranked touchdown spots for Skubal in a brand new piece. Inside this, Rymer listed the Padres as a high touchdown spot, and the match does make loads of sense.
“If ever there was a solution to present they imply enterprise, it’s by signing Skubal away from these darn Dodgers. Perhaps it wouldn’t completely undo the little brother vs. huge brother dynamic between the 2 NL West powers, however it could give the Padres an actual trump card: one of the best pitcher in baseball.
“In addition to, the Padres are going to wish Skubal if Michael King declines his $28 million participant choice for 2027 and turns into a free agent. Skubal is likely one of the few pitchers in MLB who would characterize an improve over King, even when signing him would doubtless value greater than $40 million per yr,” Rymer wrote.
The Padres have spent some huge cash in the previous few offseasons, which has backfired on this franchise at occasions. It has seen the workforce permit a number of stars to go away city, pushing again what the ceiling of this group could possibly be.
Skubal may change the whole beginning rotation for the Padres this offseason, however he’s anticipated to obtain a deal over $300 million, if not nearer to $400 million. San Diego has given out massive contracts previously, however this could be a brand new precedent for this workforce.
Ought to the Padres Go After Tarik Skubal?
On the sphere, the Padres ought to completely do no matter it takes to convey Skubal to San Diego. However the cash is will probably be one other query that this group goes to need to grapple with.
With the brand new possession in place, the Padres are anticipated to maintain spending, however giving Skubal what he needs could possibly be powerful. San Diego has loads of heavy contracts on the books already, and handing out one other could possibly be a giant swing for this workforce.
General, the Padres will probably be concerned within the Skubal sweepstakes, particularly with how president of baseball operations A.J. Preller operates. No one can rely out San Diego on this course of, however different groups may current a neater path to offer the lefty ace the kind of deal that he’s searching for this winter.
