The Pittsburgh Pirates had an up-and-down 2026 season. When one part of the sport gave the impression to be clicking, one other would falter indirectly. This was particularly the case with the bullpen in the course of the first few months of the yr. Moreover, the beginning pitching wasn’t as constant because the workforce would have hoped. Then, the offense suffered accidents and turned comparatively common late in the summertime.
General, lots has to come back collectively within the 2027 offseason to stay aggressive. A report of 82-80 doubtless received’t be ok to get into the postseason. Pirates Basic Supervisor Ben Cherington — if he’s retained — has lots of work to do.
One of many positives in the midst of the season got here close to the commerce deadline. The Pirates acquired Luke Weaver, who’s beneath workforce management by means of 2027. This provides the bullpen a really strong arm within the backend. Nevertheless, he would probably function higher as a real setup man, fairly than a better.
Pirates Urged To Carry Again Fan Favourite Nearer
Pittsburgh made the choice to commerce All-Star pitcher David Bednar again in 2025. The workforce dealt him to the New York Yankees, upsetting the fan base. The nearer is from the Metal Metropolis, so it was a disappointment when the homegrown expertise departed.
Dominic Campbell of Sports activities Illustrated urged the Pirates to signal Bednar as soon as he’s eligible to select a brand new workforce. He’s set to be a free agent.
“One participant the Pirates ought to think about is New York Yankees right-handed reduction pitcher David Bednar, a free agent after this season,” Campbell wrote.
The Pirates’ reduction workers did get higher because the season went on. Moreover, many considered the trade-deadline acquisitions as optimistic strikes.
“The Pirates’ bullpen was one space that improved by the tip of the season, however the entrance workplace shouldn’t simply cease at their commerce deadline additions and may make extra strikes this winter,” Campbell wrote. “Reuniting with Bednar, a former Pirates pitcher who grew up within the Pittsburgh space, is a choice that will include emotional advantages, however much more so on the sphere.”
Bringing Bednar again to shut for the Pirates can be a really strong transfer. He would possibly even be prepared to take a hometown low cost.
Bednar Was Stout As soon as Once more In 2026
The nearer had 35 saves for the Yankees, which was his greatest mark since having 39 again in 2023 as a member of the Pirates. Even when Bednar got here in and Don Kelly wished to make use of Mason Montomgery as a better, the bullpen can be higher off regardless.
A trio that options Bednar, Montgomery and Weaver could possibly be probably the greatest in baseball. The potential reunion is one thing to observe for. It will be smart for the Pirates to look into the chance and gauge the pitcher’s curiosity.
