The Boston Purple Sox‘s 2026 marketing campaign formally got here to an in depth on Wednesday evening, as they suffered a 9-2 loss by the hands of the New York Yankees in Sport 2 of their wild-card sequence. As soon as once more, the Sox bought nearly no manufacturing on offense, whereas their bullpen fell aside down the stretch because of a bevy of head-scratching strikes from supervisor Chad Tracy.
Probably the most consequential resolution from Tracy was his controversial resolution to take away Sonny Grey from the sport after 4.2 innings of labor in favor of Erik Miller, who had simply given up an important dwelling run in Sport 1 of this sequence the day earlier than. Grey made it very clear after the sport that he was not a fan of Tracy’s resolution to tug him, and it looks as if All-Star first baseman Willson Contreras agrees together with his teammate.
Willson Contreras Makes Ideas Clear on Chad Tracy’s Sonny Grey Transfer
In Sport 1 towards the Yankees, Tracy eliminated Payton Tolle after 4.2 innings of labor and turned to Miller to face Ben Rice. Tolle was at 83 pitches on the evening, however he had usually pitched effectively. The transfer instantly backfired, as Miller gave up a solo dwelling run to Rice that awoke the remainder of New York’s lineup.
Tracy’s resolution to take away Grey in Sport 2 was much more jarring, although. Whereas a pair of runners have been on first and second base, Grey had largely cruised by his outing, and this time, he was solely at 70 pitches on the evening. Tracy as soon as once more went to Miller out of the bullpen, and he rapidly bought burned once more, with Miller giving up an RBI single to Cody Bellinger.
Grey didn’t maintain again after the sport when discussing Tracy’s resolution to tug him, saying he would have preferred to be trusted in that state of affairs after placing collectively such a profitable season with the staff. When requested about Tracy pulling Grey out of the sport prematurely, Contreras didn’t say something, and as a substitute pantomimed himself zipping his mouth shut and throwing away the important thing.
Purple Sox End 2026 Marketing campaign With Dispiriting Sequence vs. Yankees
A lot went proper for the Purple Sox of their mid-summer turnaround that resulted in them discovering their solution to the postseason. On the finish of the day, although, this staff’s weaknesses have been an excessive amount of to beat. The lineup, which has been a weak point all yr, did nothing except for a pair of solo dwelling runs from Contreras and Nick Sogard in Sport 2, the bullpen faltered, and the lights have been clearly too vivid for Tracy, as each single transfer he made proved to be the fallacious one.
Boston finds itself in the identical actual spot it was in final offseason, because it clearly must make sweeping upgrades to its lineup to be able to take the step ahead it seems able to taking. You’d assume the entrance workplace would have figured this out after being subjected to the identical destiny in final yr’s playoffs, but when it places collectively one other weak offseason of labor, the Purple Sox may rapidly discover themselves caught within the purgatory of being a persistently mediocre staff.
