Tanner Bibee didn’t have the top to the season that he would’ve needed.
The Cleveland Guardians’ Opening Day starter acquired only one postseason pitching look, and he didn’t take the mound in any respect in the course of the six-game ALCS defeat by the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays.
He was on the Guardians’ playoff roster all through, however he merely didn’t get known as on. It was a bummer option to finish the 12 months for Bibee for certain — and experiences from the season-ending clubhouse mentioned Bibee might have been essentially the most emotional man there.
Clearly, Bibee needs to do effectively for the Guardians, however he didn’t get that probability within the playoffs.
Bibee, although, acquired some higher information on Sunday, Nov. 1.
That’s when MLB introduced its Gold Glove winners for one of the best fielder at every place in every league.
MLB’s Tanner Bibee Announcement
MLB introduced Sunday night time that Bibee was the winner of the American League Gold Glove on the pitcher place.
Bibee beat out Jacob deGrom of the Texas Rangers, in addition to Angels and Blue Jays righty Jose Soriano.
That is what MLB.com had written once they introduced the finalists:
“None of those three pitchers has taken house a Gold Glove Award, making for an thrilling competitors. Wanting on the superior metrics, Bibee has the sting in each Statcast’s Outs Above Common (+6) and Defensive Runs Saved (+5). Bibee’s and Soriano’s golf equipment, the Guardians and Blue Jays, have been closely featured on this award this decade. Shane Bieber gained for Cleveland in 2022, and José Berríos gained for Toronto the next 12 months.”
It’s value noting that the OAA metric they cited truly has to do with the protection behind the pitcher — however the DRS stat is all Bibee.
Guardians Historical past
The aforementioned Shane Bieber is the one earlier Cleveland pitcher to win this award.
That is how MLB.com added to Bibee’s win of their awards write-up:
“Bibee, who led all AL pitchers with 5 Defensive Runs Saved, is simply the second Cleveland pitcher to win a Gold Glove, becoming a member of Shane Bieber, who gained one in 2022.”
A Gold Glove gained’t make up for that indisputable fact that Bibee wasn’t trusted on the finish of the 12 months, however it’s a huge private accomplishment.
Pitchers put in lots of work every year in Spring Coaching to be succesful fielders, and Bibee stood a step above the remaining this season within the AL.
Hopefully this award is the form of good vibe that may ship Bibee into the offseason on the next notice. The Guardians will nonetheless want him to be a key contributor sooner or later — and with this added status for his glove, Bibee might enter subsequent season with a bit extra confidence.
