The Philadelphia Phillies have had a disappointing final week. After shedding within the NL Wild Card Sequence to the Atlanta Braves, they reportedly have missed out on supervisor Alex Cora.
With their championship window seemingly closing, it seems that Dave Dombrowski has a variety of points to determine within the offseason. Will Don Mattingly nonetheless be supervisor? What do they do with their stars to achieve prospects in what’s presently a horrible farm system?
USA In the present day’s Bob Nightengale has the reply to the latter query. Nightengale appeared Tuesday on 97.5 The Fanatic and revealed he expects Dombrowski to place some guys on the market. Nightengale named first baseman and proper fielder Bryce Harper, in addition to shortstop Trea Turner.
What Did Nightengale Say In regards to the Philadelphia Phillies?
It seems the Phillies could possibly be in for a retool this offseason. Nightengale thinks they are going to try to commerce a few of their star gamers.
“I believe they’ll store guys, and I believe they’ll put on the market, whether or not it’s a Bryce Harper or throwing Turner on the market,” Nightengale stated. “Undecided if they might put Kyle Schwarber on the market, how a lot he means to that clubhouse and stuff.”
Clearly, this can be a state of affairs no staff needs to be in. Nonetheless, if they’ll commerce a star, Harper makes essentially the most sense.
Harper has had his battles with Dombrowski through the years, together with final offseason when the Phillies president of baseball operations publicly puzzled if the slugger was “not elite” anymore. This might result in a change of surroundings for Harper.
The Phillies first baseman and proper fielder performed all 162 video games this season, hitting 29 dwelling runs with a .269/.380/.485 slash line, shedding any doubt he may nonetheless play at an elite degree. Subsequently, he’d be a fascinating commerce choice for groups on the lookout for an affect bat.
Harper’s contract will finish after the 2031 season, paying him about $25 million in common annual worth. The 2027 season can be his age-34 season.
What About Turner?
Whereas Harper continues to be enjoying the sport of baseball at an elite degree, Turner’s manufacturing has taken a nosedive.
In 2026, Turner slashed a poor .242/.297/.378 slash line with 19 dwelling runs and 21 stolen bases. This was simply Turner’s worst yr of his profession. However it wasn’t simply his offense that took a serious step again; his protection did as effectively. Turner had a league-high 21 errors, struggling to play shortstop.
Nonetheless, Turner’s contract can be tougher than Harper’s to commerce, not solely due to their large gaps in manufacturing. Turner’s contract is definitely valued at $27 million per yr, and he received’t be a free agent till after the 2033 season. He will even be coming into his age-34 season.
With Schwarber seemingly untouchable, one among these gamers could possibly be on the transfer, and it possible received’t be Turner.
Dombrowski definitely has his palms full this offseason. He may get nice worth for Harper, however how will the Phillies rebound?
